Matt's Rig

Well, we're goiong to be outside for about 10 hours a day during 6 days of riding with 3 days off in major metropolian areas- how does one pack for this situation? In case you're wondering, this is how I'm doing it...

I have 2 bags, a medium sized messenger bag and a rack pack. The goal here is to minimize weight and bulk, while maximizing functionality. You have to try to plan for possible disasters without going overboard and packing a flare gun.

I'm trying to keep all of the heavier gear in my rack back so as to keep the weight off my back. This includes:

Toiletries- shaving cream, razor, tooth brush, tooth paste, powder, soap, deodorant, soap and a chamois. The chamois is key since it is super absorbant, it replaces a towel and saves a ton of room.

Medical- ibuprofen, sunscreen, chap stick, moist towelettes, cold compresses, vasoline, hand sanitizer, sterile pads, sports tape, neosporin

Navigation- Treo 650 with bike mount (pictured below), TomTom Navigator 5 software and bluetooth GPS unit, Adventure Cycling Association Atlantic Coast Bike Maps, related chargers.

Food (not pictured)- Cliff Bars, Balance Bars, trail mix, fruit leather.

Other- book, patch kit, spare tube, rear blinker, multi-tool, flashlight

The rest I either wear or carry on my back in my messenger bag...

3 bike shorts, 3 bandanas, 3 socks, 3 t-shirts, 2 knee braces, cycling shoes, cycling gloves, cycling cap, rain resistant windbreaker, fleece blanket, underwear

In the end, it all comes together to look a little something like this:
